New Caney was laid out in 1862 under the name Presswood, named for pioneers Austin and Sarah Waters Presswood. Skipper John Robertson and different pioneers followed, and cows farms, plants, and stores were opened along Caney Creek. In 1877, the town got a railroad from the East and West Texas Railway, and Caney Station turned into a transportation point for imports and products, carrying more business to the area. In 1882, Presswood accepted its first mail center, enrolled under the name New Caney, as the name Caney previously was being used by another Texas town. This advancement prompted the name of Presswood to drop out of utilization, as New Caney turned into the liked term.

In 1884, the number of inhabitants in New Caney was sixty individuals. By 1892, it had developed to 150 inhabitants and had the option to help a few corner stores. All through the twentieth century, the local area kept on growing.
